I enjoyed this photography assignment as it made me realize how often my eyes casually dismiss the imposing structures and towering vegetation in my environment. We as human beings tend to be focused on the immediacy of our current surroundings and our outlook is primarily based on a horizontal trajectory (eye level). I tried to take pictures, which encapsulated my perception of the theme: Small Human: Big World. I was fortunate to be in San Francisco this past long weekend (and miss the torrential downpour in Vancouver) and was able to capture some pictures, which reflect how we navigate the “Big World” on a daily basis. I tried to employ simplicity in my compositions (albeit in a city setting) in order to highlight the contrasting size of the subjects in the photograph. I find that the photos are bold and for me they spurred me to think about the true meaning of size. The juxtaposition of the small human frame and the commanding structures in the images, serves as a reminder of the world's scale and the importance of perspective. It shows how size is relative.
For my images I used my iPhone 6 as I did not have my SLR camera with my while travelling, however I felt that the images' quality was not affected.
Here are the descriptions for each image (The numbering goes down the lefthand column, then down the righthand column).
Picture 1 - A man strides with purpose towards the Memorial Church at Stanford University. His stature appears small, in comparison to the vast Quad which he is navigating.
Picture 2 - The expansive entrance at Stanford serves to emphasize the difference in size between the man and his surroundings.
Picture 3 - The Hoover Tower, appears monolithic next to the person looking up to it.
Picture 4 - A simple palm tree dwarfs the person below.
Picture 5 - Back in Vancouver on Monday I was able to catch a window washer in West Vancouver scaling an apartment building on Bellevue Avenue. He appears minuscule in comparison to the size of the building which fills the frame.
Picture 6 - The arches seemingly consume the person who is gazing up at their splendour.
Picture 7 - The imposing lobby windows and grand foyer of a hotel in San Francisco showcases the theme "Small Human, Big World".
Picture 8 - The beautiful arches dwarf the cyclist on his way to class.
Picture 9 - The lamppost as a resting spot emphasizes the contrasting sizes between humans and the world we inhabit.
Picture 10 - The tunnel of arches provides stark contrast to the small size of the student.
Picture 11 - The black and white escalator photograph, further highlights this assignment's theme. (I chose black and white as it provided focus on the contrasting sizes in the image, and emphasized the reflection of the subject in the glass railings).
Picture 12 - The criss-crossing of escalators at Saks Fifth Avenue in San Francisco provided a contrast in size.
Picture 13 - The simple scene of the man crossing the crosswalk is another example of he theme "Small Human, Big World".
Picture 14 - I employed black and white colouring in this image to highlight the magnitude of the size difference between the man walking and the backdrop of the commanding architecture.
